Diameter Method for

Orange Peel Gores

a. Diameter of the tank with

insulation

b. Height of the tank top head with

insulation

Step 1: Draw a horizontal line one half the

diameter of the tank

Step 2: Draw a vertical line equal to the

height of the tank with insulation included.

Carry this line down from the tank top to a

point that equals the full diameter from the

tank. This bottom point is the Apex.

Step 3: Set your dividers from the Apex to

the tank top and swing an arc to form the

tank top.

Step 4: Divide the diameter of the tank top

by 10. Use this measurement to swing an

arc intersecting arc to form the curve where

the tank top and the side of the vessel

meet.

Step 5: Divide the tank top into six or eight

equal parts and label.

Step 6: Place a straight edge on the tank top

head and allowing a gap of 1/8” on each

side. Obtain a heel measurement. Round up

or down as necessary to match the equal

number of gores required to surround the

total circumference.

Step 7: Draw half the heel measurement

required for a gore at the outside edge of

the tank to the right, and then draw a line

from that point to the Apex as shown

below.

Step 8: Draw a ½” crimp allowance at the

bottom of the tank top.

Step 9: Divide the tank top into size equal

parts and extend those lines down to the

bead and crimp line. Label those lines.

Step 10: Draw a stretch-out by taking the

distance from 1 to 2 on the tank top head

and doing a six-division walk-out as shown.

Label those lines as shown.

Step 11: Transfer the measurements from

the bead and crimp line to corresponding

numbered lines on the stretch-out.

Step 12: Connect all the points on the

stretch-out to form a pattern for the gores

for the tank top. Add a lap allowance to the

heel, usually 4-6”
